Cal Newport's least-discussed claim, hidden in plain sight across his books, is that deep work needs ritual. Not just discipline. Not just willpower. Ritual — same time, same place, same setup, same cue-into-the-block. The work itself is mentally demanding; the ritual is what gets you into the work without burning the limited cognitive resource you'd need to do it. Most failed deep work attempts fail at the ritual, not at the work.
Ninety minutes is the unit. Long enough for genuine depth — the cognitive ramp-up takes 20-30 minutes before real depth is reached, so a 60-minute block is barely a 30-minute deep session. Short enough to be defensible against meetings, family demands, and the rest of the day's pressure. Two to four 90-minute blocks per week is what most working adults can sustain; six is rare; eight is a serious training programme.

- Environmental protection. Phone in another room. Notifications off. Same physical location each time if at all possible. Your brain associates the location with focused mode, and the association accelerates entry into depth.
- Pre-block ritual. Something you do consistently in the five minutes before the block starts. Coffee made a specific way. The same notebook open to a specific page. A particular piece of instrumental music. The ritual is the cue that triggers the cognitive shift.
Hit all four and the block produces depth. Miss any one and the block underperforms. Most "deep work failures" are actually one-of-four failures — the person had three of the conditions but not the fourth.

The connection: this week's three intentions (set in the weekly review) include one or two that need deep work. The deep work blocks are scheduled to those intentions specifically. The single biggest threat to a deep work block is the unscheduled meeting. Someone asks for "a quick fifteen minutes" at 10am. You agree because it sounds small. The 10am block dies because the meeting overruns, runs into the next thing, and by the time you have any space again it's after lunch and the cognitive ramp-up is fresh. Two days of this and the deep work pattern is broken.
Two protections that work:
- Calendar block as policy. The block exists in the calendar before any meeting requests come in. Other people can see you're busy in that slot. The default answer to a meeting request that conflicts with the block is "can we do it after 11:30?" — and almost always the answer is yes.
- Pre-committed task. Before the block starts, you've identified the specific cognitive task. Not "work on the report" but "write the executive summary section." This means the first five minutes of the block don't get consumed by figuring out what to do; you start immediately.
